Golf Apparel

Posted on Wednesday, 2nd December 2009 in Recreation And Sports

When choosing golf apparel, as with golf shoes, man people’s choices are primarily driven by looks and fashion. While these are no doubt important factors (who doesn’t want to look good?), they shouldn’t be the only factors: the right (or wrong) choice of clothing can greatly affect a player’s game.

Of course, you may not have a totally free choice of what you can wear on the course. While some golf clubs do allow you to wear what you want as long as it is tasteful, there are also many that have rules about what is acceptable on their course. Typical rules state that no tank tops, short shorts or jeans are allowed, and often also require that all players wear shirts with collars.

For men, the choice of golf apparel is usually relative uncomplicated. Khaki pants and a collared polo shirt are the the most popular choice and acceptable on almost all golf courses. In warm weather conditions, most golf clubs allow male players to wear fitted shorts. Most players also find a hat useful, as it helps keep the sun out of their eyes.

Women usually have a much wider choice of golf apparel that men. Golf skirts are increasingly popular as they do not restrict movement, but some women prefer shorts or loose pants. As with men, polo shirts are also widespread, and some upscale golf course allow women to wear sleeveless polos. Keeping the sun out of one’s eyes is just as important for female players as for men, and many women opt for visors, although some do prefer hats.

Here are some tips on choosing golf apparel:

- It is usually best to choose clothes that are made of lightweight, breathable fabrics – especially if you mainly play in cold weather conditions. Of course manufacturers of golf apparel are aware of this requirement, and so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find clothing like this.

- Another thing to bear in mind is that if your clothing is too tight it can be a positive disadvantage. A good golf swing is based on a smooth fluid movement, and hence you must choose apparel which does not restrict your movement.

- When playing golf there’s a lot of bits and pieces (like golf tees, divot markers and extra balls) that you need to carry around with you, and hence having pockets in your shorts or pants is very convenient. Of course, you don’t want to stuff your pockets (extra balls are a particular culprit for this) as it can throw off your swing quite a bit.

There are many places to find golf apparel. You can of course buy golf clothing in a golf store, or a the pro shop at the golf course, but the cheapest option is often the Internet – you may be amazed at some of the bargains that you can get online!

Golf Club Reviews

Posted on Friday, 27th November 2009 in Recreation And Sports
Seth Miller

In golf, various types of golf clubs are used. In fact, a golfer may carry up to fourteen clubs during a round as per game rules. The principle of this is that in playing golf, it is easier to keep your swing as invariable as possible and attain variable lengths and distinctiveness of ball flight using different club for each shot. It is much better than having a single club and be forced to modify only the speed and direction of your swing.

For this reason, there are many different golf clubs available on the golfing market. You may find golf clubs in various categories such as woods, hybrids, irons, and putters. A wedge, a golf club type that resembles an iron, is also another category of golf clubs. Golf clubs are also available in different and widely varied brand names.

And if you’re a new golfer buying equipment like golf clubs, you may want to be careful in choosing your purchases. One way of making sure that you’re getting the right club and the right brand is going over golf club reviews. Such reviews may offer information on what brands really offer convenient and reliable golfing. Often, people involved in golf club reviews are fellow golfers offering their views about a certain brand they’ve just purchased and used.

Mostly, you’ll find golf club reviews in online forums about golfing equipment and golf in general. Individual reviews are also available on the net; these are expert reviews and advice from professional golfers or golfing equipment experts. Magazines about golfing and golfing equipment also include columns offering reviews about different golf club brands.

Golf clubs in different materials are also often being reviewed especially by golf experts and professionals. Golf club reviews will help you get views on what club you should get and what specific brand fits your golfing styles. Reviews about damages and shipments may also help you be very particular about golf club dealers.

Golf Swing Techniques

Posted on Wednesday, 25th November 2009 in Recreation And Sports
Keith Perrett

Just about every golfer you talk to will be only too happy to give you a few pointers about how you can improve your golf swing. Golf swing techniques can be found at the 19th hole, in golfing magazines and books, on DVDs and videos.

Apart from the dazzling array of golf swing techniques available to confuse you, the language used to convey the message is sometimes so techno jargon laden that I wonder whether I am reading about a golf swing or microsoft’s latest software.

I appreciate that golf is a technical sport and that the biomechanics of the golf swing have been studied and recorded in great detail. The results of these efforts are plain for all to see with every swing guru advocating a favourite “law of the golf swing”!

Unfortunately the upshot of all this advice is usually an acute onset of paralysis by analysis – which manifests as dismal golf shots out on the course.

“The simple golf swing” is a golf swing technique based on 5 simple steps. It focuses on the golf swing basics, starting with your set up position over the ball. The aim of this swing technique is simple – simplify your swing as much as possible so that you have a golf swing that is consistent.

The result is that players, irrespective of ability or handicap, experience a marked improvement in their ability to land tee shots on the fairway and hit the greens from the fairway. And if you can do that consistently, as you will with this golf swing technique, then your scores have to drop and your enthusiasm for the game (and dare I say life in general?) has to soar!

“The simple golf swing” is not magic. It simply dissects the anatomy of the golf swing, eliminates everything that is unnecessary or confusing, and presents you with a no frills swing in a way that even I can understand.

So, lets get real. For most of us it doesn’t make sense to try to copy the golf swing techniques of the top pros – we aren’t good enough and we are going to make our lives a misery proving we aren’t good enough.

But that certainly doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy our golf and take on all comers at our local golf course. A consistent, repeatable golf swing that gives you confidence in your game puts you ahead of 95% of players you will play against. What a pleasant thought!

Golf Earning While Enjoying

Posted on Sunday, 15th November 2009 in Recreation And Sports
Keith W

Breaking golf news! Professional golf tours offer a new exciting golf experience for all amateurs and golf professionals worldwide! With the spirit of sportsmanship and the spirit of golf competitiveness, professional golf tours have created a wide audience since its first introduction way back 1968. Though playing golf is considered one of the lucrative sports, this did not hinder the objective of coming into a group to share each talent and enjoy the game.

A tour is a term used for a series of games played in golf tournament. This Professional golf tours have created an annual tour schedule of weekly tournaments played all over the world. The schedule is based on the geographical location of the players.

Earning while enjoying

Most of the golfers earn money through the sports. Professional golfers (at least 95%) make their main income as club or teaching professionals, rather than from competition. “Touring professionals”, also known as “Tournament golfers” or “Pro golfers”, who make their income from prize money and endorsements, are small elite within the profession. The very best golfers make up to 8-figure incomes in U.S. dollars.

The Market

The present market of professional golf tours have employed several segments all over the world. These have created the woman’s tournament, and the seniors tournament. Women’s Professional golf tours is organised by independent regional tours. Leading female golfers make incomes well over USD$1 million per year, more than most other women athletes other than top tennis players.

On the other hand, in Men’s senior Professional golf tours, when the male golfer reaches age 50, male golfers are eligible to compete in senior tournaments. Golf is unique among sports in having high profile and lucrative competitions for players of this age group. Nearly all of the famous golfers who are eligible to compete in these events choose to do so, unless they are unable to for health reasons.

A number of players win more than a million dollars in prize money each season, and once endorsements and other business activities are taken into account, a few of the “legends of golf” in this age group earn more or less as much as any of the younger PGA Tour pros, other than Tiger Woods. The two main senior tours are: Champions Tour (based in the United States) and European Seniors Tour.

Playing golf has elevated to a level that it has been recognized as a game played to have the players excel in the field and not only as an individual sports. Now having a background on the game, can you feel the excitement? Be updated with golf news and see the new difference in golf tournaments.

3 Dynamic Concept Golf Swing Principles

Posted on Tuesday, 3rd November 2009 in Recreation And Sports
John Toepel

Concept Golf’s five swing principles have been proven effective by countless golfers at all levels. The principles are not just theory — they are what works and what the best players have always done. These five fundamentals cause all of the positive, desired effects you see in the Tour Players’ swings. They are based upon the same fundamental athletic motion you use when you throw a ball. They are not scientific, but they do follow the laws of physics. You don’t need to think about these things, but having a thorough understanding of the total concept of the swing will benefit you.

1. Weight Transfer: This is the foundation the basic athletic motion used in every ground based sport. It is simply the moving of the body to the back foot to cause the back swinging motion. Then moving the body to the front foot to cause the through swinging motion. It is movement OVER to the back foot. You can accomplish this by picking your front foot up in the air. What happens? All of your weight moves to your back foot. That’s exactly what you want to have happen.

By moving all your weight to your back foot you have gotten the mass of your body behind the ball and it is now ready to move back through the ball. To reverse the direction of the swing, transfer all of your weight from your back foot to your front foot. That is all there is to it. Stand on your back foot then stand on your front foot.

There is NO turning, just a lateral move to your back foot then to your front foot. Might your head move when you do this? YES, it will. Is this OK? It is necessary, not just OK. The still head thing is a myth, a folk remedy discussed in The Swing book.

It is the moving of your body through weight transfer that permits the swinging of your arms. This is strength, power, effortlessness, distance, consistency. Other than that its not important.

This principle is intertwined with the next principle, Relaxation. They are dependent on each other. Without weight transfer, relaxation will not and cannot occur. Without relaxation weight transfer cannot and will not occur.

2. Relaxation: This is possible for you, and every golfer, to accomplish. It is necessary for every golfer to accomplish if he is to have any real quality shots success. This is the secret to great distance. It is the secret to high consistency quality shots. Nothing works well in athletics without relaxation. It sems to be counter-intuitive in golf.

You see the green 442 yards away and you drive the ball with all your might. That’s seems to be the effective thing to do to make the ball go as far as possible. What happens to the drive? It goes 157 yards slicing in to the trees. The solution? Swing harder. You’re really going to kill the ball this time. The result? You do kill it this time. It dies at your feet!!

The golf swing is an expression of centrifugal force. Remember swinging the rock at the end of the string in science class in 8th grade? To make the rock go faster you had two choices; speed up your hand that held the end of the string or make the string longer. PUSHING ON THE STRING MADE THE ROCK STOP, NOT GO FASTER.

That’s centrifugal force, that’s the golf swing. The rock on the end of the string is the club head. The string is the shaft and your arms. The string attaches at your sternum. To make the club head move more quickly you have two choices; lengthen the string (longer shaft) or speed up your sternum. BY PUSHING ON THE STRING YOU WILL NOT MAKE THE CLUB MOVE MORE QUICKLY, YOU WILL SLOW IT DOWN.

To create maximum speed in the club head requires maximum relaxation in your shoulders. Then the club will be swung without interruption. Your job is to relax so your arms can swing freely, so your club can swing freely and at its maximum possible speed.

Trying to swing your club at the ball with all your might will keep you a 100+ shooter. I promise.

How do you speed up your sternum? With your feet just like you do when you throw a ball. Want to throw it farther, quicken your feet. Want to hit a longer shot? Quicken your feet a little bit. Don’t try hard to quicken your feet a lot. A little additional speed in you feet translates to a lot more speed in your sternum and a whole lot more speed in your club head.

Relax your shoulders until it seems they are coming out of their sockets DURING THE ENTIRE SWING and you have increased your club speed exponentially. I promise.

3. Back leg and knee: This is your real source of power. During your backswing, keep your back leg flexed and the weight and pressure on the ball and big toe of your foot. Now as you reach the top of your backswing your back leg is in position to push against the ground in order to push your body forward to your front foot. The good baseball pitchers pitch with this motion. You throw a ball this way , pitch a horse shoe this way, shoot a basket ball this way, etc., etc. your power, and delicacy come from your back leg. It can and will work automatically if you have weight transfer, relaxation and keep you back leg flexed during the backswing.

Did you notice that I spent more words describing the relaxation section than the other four sections? Would it seem that I think relaxation is important?

Now, relax your shoulders and go play golf. The five Concept Golf swing principles are not five things to do but a whole concept to understand.

Understanding the Golf Swing Tempo

Posted on Tuesday, 3rd November 2009 in Recreation And Sports
Nathan Blake

The golf swing tempo is certainly one of the most difficult aspects of golf. There is no written standard about it and it differs per golf player. One thing striking about the golf swing tempo is that various individuals have different views about it.

Let us take a closer look on how this bleak aspect of golf should be addressed. Basically, the golf swing tempo is the timing between the backswing and the swing. This is the short pause wherein you take your time to allocate the force needed to hit the golf ball. That short pause is a very decisive moment because this is where the success of the swing depends. Of course, in every situation in golf, time is a factor that should never be underestimated.

Another thing that you may ask then is how fast should every swing be? This is the where contention about golf swing tempo comes into play. Every golf player has a different swing speed. If you were to observe two golf players, you would certainly notice that they employ different timing behind each swing. This is because they use different counting measures that would tell them when to strike. One of them is perhaps using his mind for counting while the other is using an external counting device such as a metronome.

The golf swing tempo should not be contained within the parameters of exact counting. As mentioned earlier, time is a factor that greatly helps a golf player when to strike. However, there are methods in which you can improve your timing so that you not get confused. Here are two:

• Downloadable golf metronome to mobile devices such as an iPhone. There are plenty of phone applications available on the internet that would greatly get your golfing skills in shape. This is not to replace your golfing instincts but rather to polish them.

• Upbeat music. You can even use lively music to polish your golf swing tempo. You can use the beat that the music has and find your timing to hit the golf ball. You can do this during your practice sessions.

These two things are highly recommended if you are going to use external counting measures during practice sessions. This way, you would be able to clearly gauge your timing and the force needed on your swing. You have all the time in the world and do not rush your swings or else it would turn out badly. Golf swing tempo is a significant element in playing golf so be sure to practice it more.

Golf Betting Games

Posted on Tuesday, 27th October 2009 in Recreation And Sports
Ken Marlborough

Golf is a game that has international appeal. Generally considered to be an elite game, golf has a very big following among professionals and amateurs. Golf is played on specially designed courses, according to certain rules and regulations. For professional golf, these rules are governed jointly by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) and the United States Golf Association (USGA). There are international championships held across the world for golf: the Masters, the Open Championship, the US Open and the PGA Championship.

The main objective in golf is to hit a ball with a club until it reaches the cup, and use the minimum number of strokes.

Like other professional sports, a lot of betting goes on in golf. Wagering about the outcome of a golf game is the main objective of golf betting. “Matchup betting” and “betting to win” are the two kinds of wagering for non-sports like golf, boxing and tennis. In betting to win, futures are set by odds makers before the start of the game. Futures are bets that are placed much in advance of the game, sometimes months in advance. Betting to win is most common for professional championships like the Masters. In matchup betting, the wager is placed on the event’s winner. It is one individual against another or one individual against a group, which is known as group matchup betting. One advantage of futures odds is that they are not set but can be adjusted by sports books. The odds depend on the number of players as well as the kind of players, and the likelihood of top players to win.

Some of the top golf betting games are: Nassau, Round Robin, Sandies, Bingo Bango Bongo, Barkies, Wolf, Arnies, Aces and Deuces, Gruesome and Criers and Whiners.

Golf Head Cover Designs

Posted on Monday, 12th October 2009 in Recreation And Sports
Nathalie Fiset

Playing golf can be one of the most favorite past times for a wide variety of people. If you have the time, the right golf technique, a good movement coordination, and of course, the resources to acquire golf equipment and to get to a golf course where you can play golf, you are almost all set to enjoy golf. However, although many may seem to nod to the idea that golf is all about those mentioned basic requirements, some beg to disagree. There’s more to golfing if you are a fun-loving person and that is making your equipment top of the line, golfing accessories included, such as golf head covers.

What is a golf head cover, a newbie in golfing might ask. It is that golf accessory that protects the golf driver, and even irons if you have a full set, from getting damaged during travels or just when you are in a hurry to pull a club out or drop one into the bag.

What’s the use of a golf head cover, as mentioned, it is for protection. Since golf is a not-for-the-pauper game, golf equipment can be with very hefty price tags. The expensiveness of golf equipment is the very reason that many golfers need to protect their stuff. A golf head cover can help in this arena.

Golf clubs need utmost care and one of the most critical parts of golf clubs that require care is the golf club head. Why? The golf club head can make or break your game since this part of the golf club is the very part that gets in direct contact with the golf ball. Using golf head covers can solve a golfer’s dilemma about how to care for this important part of his or her golf clubs.

One of the greatest nemesis of many golfers is rust on their golf club heads. And as nature has made it to be, rust can’t be avoided. A golf enthusiast can be very particular in maintaining their golf club heads clean and safe from rust. But it’s just impossible to expect rust to never visit your golf club heads because these golf equipment are made of carbon steel which is plated with chrome. As one uses a club, it gets exposed to abrasion, friction, and moisture, which builds up to produce rust. And rust on golf club heads can eventually turn a great golfer’s greatest hit into a bad one. You can slow down the process of allowing your priced golf club heads from succumbing to annoying rust – use golf club head covers. The golf head cover will keep the club head dry, which will consequently delay rusting.

Now after the uber-functional discussion about golf head covers, let’s go to the fun part. Golf head covers are also considered status symbols. The style of your golf head cover will indicate what your preferences are in terms of aesthetic value and of course, it will show what you can afford to buy. This is because there is a myriad of golf head covers, even designer ones that the more sophisticated type of golfer will definitely love.

So what are your golf head cover design options? Choose among the following popular designs by deciding which will suit your personality best.

Plain golf head cover exists for those who **** too much trinkety sporting equipment. It can be less taxing if you are someone who gets disturbed by too much color or attention, especially from other golf players.

Popeye golf head cover is available for those who never get tired of the Popeye cartoon show. You will almost hear your golf club head munching on spinach if you use this style of golf head cover. Just kidding!

A bulldog golf head cover is for you if you simply love dogs, especially bull dogs. Great for really virile guys who want more fun from golf and some attention from other golfers, say girl golfers. Arf!

State flag design head covers are for those who are very patriotic and would always appreciate anything that symbolizes his or her country.

Your own golf club might be giving away free golf head covers. Just ask.
Enjoy protecting your golf club heads with fun golf head covers!

Playing Winning Golf

Posted on Thursday, 8th October 2009 in Recreation And Sports
Lawrence Bredenkamp

It is quite amazing how many club players do not concentrate on playing winning golf. If you want to play winning golf you sometimes have to forget about your score – as crazy as this sounds.

Golf is a game of fun and there is no more fun than playing winning golf yet how many of us get tense when we drop an unnecessary shot. Take it in the context of the game and react accordingly.

What do I mean by that? Well quite simply most golfers seem to want to get their best score ever – every time they play. Now this is quite natural because the average golfer is fortunate if he can play once a week. It therefore becomes important to him to play his best. But striving to play your best every time you play golf puts you under tremendous pressure and more often than not leads to disappointment.

May I suggest you concentrate on the game in hand and if you succeed in that you will learn to relax, enjoy, win more often and no doubt shoot lower scores.

Let’s put some numbers to this. If we take matchplay for example your score does not count for anything other than being better, the same or worse than your opponents score. This in turn means you have either won, halved or lost that particular hole. Nothing more and nothing less – so does it matter if you made a birdie or a par when your opponent has made a double bogey? No it doesn’t.

Like wise if you are playing a stableford scoring system. The actual score only determines whether of not you get points on the hole. Once again ignore your opponent and concentrate on scoring on every hole. If the opposition has already made whatever number of points you still need to make as many as possible. If you have a twenty foot putt left to make one point then leaving it short is no good – at least make sure you putt it firmly enough to at least have a chance of going in.

Most club games at my club are played on a Best-Ball basis where you have a partner and the best stableford points between you count towards your team score. This should allow you to be bold in many instances as you try and improve on your team score. After all you are trying to play winning golf. To do that you need to have a team strategy not two individuals who are only concerned about their own individual scores.

When it comes to stroke play or medal you need to adopt a different approach as there is no point at which you can pick up and proceed to the next hole until you have completed the last. In this type of game every shot counts so more caution is required. For example on our previously mentioned twenty foot putt you would want to put it pretty close to ensure that at worse you will two-putt.

Essentially those are the three types of competitions played:

Strokeplay – where every shot counts and the player with the lowest score wins.

Matchplay – where the best score on each hole wins the hole and the player/s who win the most holes win the match.

And a point scoring match (of which stableford is probably the most common) where the player/s with the most points wins.

Learn to understand the competition you are playing in and plan your strategy accordingly so that you improve your chances of playing winning golf.

Of course we often have private bets which take a totally different format to the overall competition – this does not lend itself to winning golf simply because it is difficult to win one competition when there is another – different – competition within a competition. Arrange with your four ball to have your bets on the same basis as the main competition.

If you want to learn to play winning golf you need to understand the intricacies of different competitions and adjust your game accordingly. Sure it’s great to continually shoot good scores but I am sure if you start playing winning golf you will automatically find that you will start playing better and shooting lower.
